"Conservation, Preservation, Materials Science: Exactly WHAT do you do?"

M.Susan Barger received the firstScience/Humanities interdisciplinary degree granted by Penn State with a Ph.D. in materials science, chemistry, and history of technology. Susan has practiced museum conservation for 40+ years as a researcher, educator, and consultant. She has been a professor in the Department of MaterialsScience and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University as well as in the Department of Earth and Planetary Science at the University of New Mexico. She has authored books on material sciences including "TheDaguerreotype: Nineteenth-Century Technology" and "Modern Science" (2000) with William B. White. Dr. Barger has also been a coordinator for the Foundation for Advancement in Conservation’s Connecting to Collections Care Program and recently received the 2020 David Magnon-University Products Conservation Advocacy Award. Currently she serves on the Community Board of Conserv Solutions as a preservation professional.
